What happens at my first visit?

How much does a dental cleaning cost?
The amount of cleaning needed depends on the condition of your teeth and gums. After assessing your oral health, we can explain the recommended cleaning and associated fees before proceeding.
How much does a filling cost?
The cost of a filling depends on factors such as the tooth, the size of the filling and the material used. After Dr. Fisher examines the tooth, we can provide an estimate.
How much does a dental crown cost?
Crown fees vary depending on the tooth, the complexity of treatment and the laboratory work required. We can provide an estimate after your examination and help you understand what your dental plan may cover.
Do you offer white fillings?
Yes. The appropriate filling material depends on the location and condition of the tooth. Dr. Fisher can explain the available options and their benefits so you can make an informed decision.
Do you accept dental insurance and the CDCP?
Yes. Shen Dental offers direct billing and works with most Canadian dental insurance plans. We also accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Coverage varies by plan, so patients are responsible for amounts not covered by their plan. Please bring your current coverage information to your appointment.

How often should I visit the dentist?

What should I do if I have an urgent dental concern?
If you have significant tooth pain, a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth or another urgent dental concern, call Shen Dental at (604) 566-7777. We’ll advise you on the appropriate next step and appointment availability.
What is a root canal?
Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth so the tooth can be cleaned, sealed and preserved when appropriate. The complexity and fee depend on the tooth and your individual situation; we can provide an estimate after an examination.
What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are a preventive coating placed on the chewing surfaces of certain teeth to help protect areas that are vulnerable to decay. Dr. Fisher can advise whether sealants are appropriate for you.
How can I whiten my teeth?
Shen Dental offers professional in-office teeth whitening. Dr. Fisher can assess your teeth and discuss whether whitening is appropriate for you and what results you can reasonably expect.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Professional whitening is generally considered safe when it is appropriate for the patient and performed under dental supervision. Some people can experience temporary sensitivity or gum irritation, so Dr. Fisher will consider your oral health before recommending treatment.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Possible signs include red or swollen gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, gum recession or loose teeth. If you notice changes in your gums, a dental examination can help determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
Do you see children?
Shen Dental primarily serves adult patients, but children may be accommodated depending on their individual dental needs. Please call the clinic if you would like to discuss whether Shen Dental is a good fit for your child.
What can I do about sensitive teeth?
Tooth sensitivity can have several causes, including gum recession, enamel wear, decay or other dental conditions. Dr. Fisher can help identify the cause and recommend an appropriate approach, which may include desensitizing toothpaste or fluoride treatment.
What is the best way to care for my teeth at home?
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily. Your home-care routine may need to be adjusted to your individual oral health, so ask us if you’re unsure which products or techniques are right for you.
How can I prevent bad breath?
Regular brushing, cleaning between the teeth and keeping your tongue clean can help. Persistent bad breath can also be related to dry mouth, gum disease or other conditions, so speak with Dr. Fisher if it continues despite good home care.
