Lesson 1: What is Teeth?

Our teeth are super important in our daily lives, even if we don’t always notice them! Every time we smile, eat, or speak, we are using our teeth!

What is a Tooth?

Each tooth in your mouth is made up of two main parts: the Crown and the Root.

What Makes Up a Tooth?

Each tooth has four layers:

  1. ENAMEL: The smooth outer layer of the tooth, which is the hardest material in your body. Enamel protects your tooth while chewing and gives your teeth their white color!

  2. DENTINE: The second layer, which is thick and makes up most of the tooth. It's also the layer where you feel sensitivity to hot and cold.

  3. PULP: The third layer, located deep inside the tooth. The pulp contains blood vessels and soft tissue, making it very sensitive.

  4. CEMENTUM: The layer that covers the dentine under the gums and helps secure the tooth’s root to the jawbone.
