Lesson 10: Don’t Be Nervous

Lots of kids get nervous about visiting the dentist. It is understandable. Our teeth are a huge part of our lives so it makes sense that we would feel the need to protect our teeth.

However, regular visits to the dentist are so important in maintaining good health. If you don’t go to the dentist, your teeth may become riddled with cavities and decay and then the dentist really won’t be your favourite person!

If you make sure to take good care of your teeth and go to the dentist often, then there should be no reason to be frightened.

A FEW WAYS TO GET OVER THE FEAR OF GOING TO THE DENTIST ARE:
  • Tell your dentist you are scared. It’s hard to admit, but communicating with them that you are frightened will help them to be more aware of your comfort.
  • Ask your dentist to explain what they are going to do to you. Sometimes understanding why someone is going to have their hand in your mouth and the steps they will be taking can help in reducing your fear.
  • Take care of your teeth! For a lot of people, the fear of going to the dentist has to do with the fear of pain. If you take good care of your teeth there is less of a chance of your dentist having to perform any treatments that could cause you pain.
  • Face your fear head-on! Sometimes the only over is through. Face your fear and chances are the reality is far less frightening than you imagined!
